Dr. Michael R. Kosorok, W.R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor and chair of the biostatistics department at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health, has been selected for the American Statistical Association’s Noether Senior Scholar Award.

Established in 1999 as a tribute to Dr. Gottfried Emanuel Noether, a leading statistical scholar, researcher and educator, the award is given annually to a distinguished senior researcher and teacher in nonparametric statistics.

As part of the award, Dr. Kosorok will present the Senior Noether Lecture at the 2019 Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM), to be held July 27-Aug. 1, in Denver. The annual conference attracts more than 6,500 attendees from 52 countries.

Dr. Kosorok’s primary research expertise is in data science, machine learning and precision medicine. He also has expertise in the application of biostatistics and data science to human health research, including research on cystic fibrosis and cancer. He holds a joint professorship in statistics and operations research in the UNC College of Arts and Sciences.
