UTexas Receives $1.67 Million Grant for Dallas Preschool Readiness Project

A new $1.67 million grant for the University of Texas School of Public Health will continue the Dallas Preschool Readiness Project where researchers will study how self-regulation and racial and ethnic disparities contribute to school readiness. The grant was provided by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD). Dr. Margaret O’Brien Caughy, principal investigator and professor in the division of health promotion and behavioral science at the UTexas Dallas Regional Campus, feels that the focus on ethnic minority communities is important because traditionally these children are more likely to experience early academic failure. Greater self-regulation is associated with lower levels of problem behaviors, increased academic readiness, and more optimal academic adjustment, setting children up for success now and in the long term.
