For their leadership of the non-profit Brighter Bites, Dr. Shreela Sharma and her business partner, Ms. Lisa Helfman have been named numbers 60 and 61 on Business Insider’s Food 100 — a ranking of the 100 coolest people in the world of food and drink. Dr. Sharma is an associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology, Human Genetics & Environmental Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).
Brighter Bites delivers fresh produce and educational materials and programs to underserved communities across the country. Since its inception in Texas in 2012, the organization has provided over 18 million pounds of free produce — donated or reclaimed from food growers, distributors and food banks — to more than 265,000 people across 125 sites in Houston, Dallas, Austin, New York City, the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, and Southwest Florida.
