Vanderbilt: Society of Urologic Oncology Honors MPH Alumnus Contributions

Dr. Daniel Barocas, associate professor of urology, is being recognized with a national award from the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO) for his efforts to develop urologic cancer quality measures.

The SUO’s Distinguished Service Award is given to a urologist whose actions at work or in the community exceed job expectations and reflect values of compassion, respect, trust, commitment to excellence and teamwork and also educate the community about prostate cancer.

Dr. Barocas was nominated primarily for his work on building urologic cancer quality measures for the Commission on Cancer (CoC).

Dr. Barocas led a committee with representatives from the American Urological Association and the SUO to develop several measures for bladder, prostate and kidney cancer. These are being used to measure and improve cancer care at CoC hospitals, which treat 70 percent of cancer patients nationwide.

“Dan has really made tremendous contributions to the field of urologic oncology, even for someone who is still relatively early in his career,” said Dr. David Penson, Paul V. Hamilton and Virginia E. Howd Professor of Urologic Surgery and chair of the department.

“His work in prostate cancer has not only advanced the field, it has directly benefited patients treated at VUMC. He is a real credit to the department and the institution,”

Dr. Barocas has previously received the SUO’s Young Investigator Award and is a past president of the SUO’s subsection, the Young Urologic Oncologists.
