ASPPH is working with nine national health professions educational organizations to enable students to safely supplement the health care workforce during this time of crisis through an initiative called Students Assist America. Specifically, we are working to pilot engagement with the Medical Reserve Corps in Virginia to create meaningful volunteer experiences.
The types of activities range from contact tracing to staffing mental health hotlines to conducting testing with appropriate PPE. Looking ahead, we anticipate students in the health professions to be an integral part of any mass vaccination efforts, as they have during other outbreaks such as tuberculosis and H1N1.
Virginia-based students can apply through the Students Assist America page here. While the pilot program is focused on recruiting Student Assist America participants into the Virginia Medical Reserve Corps, there are other additional Medical Reserve Corps locations around the country that students can volunteer with directly.
We hope to see public health students and alumni well-represented in this important endeavor!
