Washington: Center Staff Member, Alumna Wins $100,000 Bullitt Environmental Prize

Ms. Maria Blancas, a staff member of the University of Washington School of Public Health and alumna of its Community-Oriented Public Health Practice program, will receive this year’s $100,000 Bullitt Environmental Prize for her work with immigrant farmworkers in Washington state.

Ms. Blancas, an outreach and education specialist for the Pacific Northwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center in the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences, leads a collaboration between UW researchers and farmworkers in Washington’s Skagit and Whatcom counties to evaluate the cumulative impact of health, social and environmental factors on farmworkers.

The prize is awarded annually by the Bullitt Foundation. Ms. Blancas will use these resources to complete her doctoral degree in the UW School of Environmental and Forest Services, creating a digital platform for storytelling about farmworker experiences.
