Washington Study Uses Census Tract Data to Link Obesity to Social Disparities

A University of Washington School of Public Health study found obesity in the Seattle area was linked to factors such as home values and education. The authors believe their study is the first to make such a finding using census tract data, as well as actual measured heights and weights, as opposed to self-reported measurements. Using such granular data to map disease “can be a potentially valuable tool in public health,” the authors say, leading to targeted local efforts to stem obesity.
