WashU Finds Prisoners Who Suffered Trauma Need Special Support When Freed

Prisoners who witnessed or experienced physical or sexual trauma as adults or children need tailored social support upon their release, according to a new study from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis. Researchers surveyed 163 male prisoners shortly before their release. Those who reported physical or sexual trauma also reported greater degrees of mental health issues such as depression or paranoia, as well as substance abuse disorders. They also reported poorer quality of perceived post-release social support.
