WashU Promotes Physical Activity in Brazil: A Strategy to Reduce Health Inequalities

Physical inactivity accounts for as many as 5.3 million deaths per year worldwide and is often a risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, cancers, asthma, and diabetes. To address this issue, several Brazilian state capitals have implemented the programs, free of charge, in parks, plazas, community centers, and health care units where physical education professionals deliver dancing, aerobics, stretching, and strength exercise classes among many others. Participation in physical activity programs such as Academia da Cidade and CuritibAtiva have been previously evaluated and shown to be consistently associated with higher levels of leisure-time physical activity in adults. However, up until recently, little was known about specific characteristics of the program’s participants.
