WashU Study Finds Links to Depression in Appalachian Women

Poverty and smoking are among the leading predictors of depression for women in Appalachia, according to a study from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis. Researchers from the Brown School and The Ohio State University surveyed 570 women from 29 Ohio counties in Appalachia. The study, published in the September issue of the Journal of Rural Mental Health, is the first to investigate the effect of multiple social determinants on depression in Appalachia.
