WashU Study Identifies Gaps in Built-Environment Research

Research into physical activity and the built environment (PABE) should broaden to include more delivery and dissemination, recommends a new study from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis. The study was the first to map citation patterns demonstrating development of research into the relationship between physical activity and the built environment, which includes freeways and sidewalks and access to healthy foods and parks. Researchers analyzed the network of citations among 318 journal articles examining physical activity and the built environment published from 1986-2013. When new research findings are published, the authors typically cite relevant past findings, making citation patterns a useful way to understanding the development of a field.
