Friday Letter

Mission Statement: The Friday Letter disseminates stories that speak to and further ASPPH’s mission to promote the efforts of schools and programs of public health to improve the health of every person through education, research, and policy. The Friday Letter serves as a weekly account of the excellence and relevance of CEPH-accredited member schools and programs of public health to the academic and practice community at large. The publication aims for inclusiveness and clarity at all levels in its content and creation.

Description: The Friday Letter is the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health’s complimentary, weekly e-newsletter. We feature the latest research, opportunities, and groundbreaking developments from CEPH-accredited schools and programs of public health.

Submissions: Please send all submissions to

  • Deadlines and Style Guidelines
    • Each section will be limited to two articles per member institution. If more than two are submitted then ASPPH editorial staff will determine which will be published.
    • Articles should be written in the third person and one-page maximum in length (Arial, 11-point, single-spaced).
    • Make an attempt to minimize opinion and emotion in the language of the article.
    • Articles should be submitted in paragraph format. Articles consisting of only bullets or headers will not be accepted.
    • All articles should be proof-read before submission.  Although the articles will go through an editing process, articles with significant grammatical or spelling errors will not be published.
    • Always include a link to a press release, web site or other resource for more information if available.
    • All persons mentioned in the Friday Letter will be referred to as Dr., Mr., Ms., etc. This is to alleviate the possibility of leaving out credentials. The responsibility of providing the correct title falls to the author of the article. When referring to someone who is both a doctor and a member of the military, please use their military title.
    • Faculty educational backgrounds will only be included when relevant to article.
    • People’s titles and professional associations must be limited to two roles.
    • Headlines may not exceed one line in length and they must note the member institutions role in the story.
    • Articles will be published throughout the week and the Friday Letter will be sent out on Friday.
    • Photos and images that accompany articles are highly encouraged.
      • Please submit images that are relevant to the article, remember that the imagery does not have to explain the entire article in one picture, but rather encourage the user to click and/or read your content OR provide supporting/clarifying information to the content.
      • Make sure you own the rights to the image and pass along the appropriate captions and credits if applicable
      • Images should be horizontally oriented, and no less than 600 px in width.
      • Images need to be high quality and not pixelated or obviously photoshopped (think editorial images). They cannot be graphics, logos, or have any words/type in them.
      • Stock imagery will be used if an appropriate photo is not provided, ASPPH would like to keep the use of stock photos to a minimum.
    • Articles must be received by Tuesday at 12 p.m. (Eastern) in order to appear in that week’s issue. (Note: ASPPH follows the Federal work schedule. If the office is closed on a Friday, the newsletter will be sent the business day before.)

    ASPPH News

    Mission:  These stories – as determined by ASPPH leadership and staff – are highlights of the association’s efforts. They are timely and often run prominently on the homepage.

    Member Health Research and Reports

    Mission:  Disseminates current innovative and groundbreaking research and reports conducted by schools and programs of public health. ASPPH will only accept articles that are about published research and reports. Articles must summarize the findings in a manner that is accessible to not only colleagues in the field, but to a relative layman who may be interested in learning more about the field. Articles that merely point to a journal or other subscription-based publication will not be accepted.

    Examples of articles that would not be accepted:

    • Grant announcements
    • A piece lacking in sufficient summary or explanation of findings
    • Textbook chapters
    • Research that does not include public health faculty and/or staff

    School & Program Updates

    Mission:  This section is designed to showcase members as active players in the public health field through news of innovations, partnerships, and other unique efforts. News must have a large impact and reverberate beyond the member institution itself. The story news must be tied to the member institution or its work directly, and not be secondary in nature (e.g., hosting a lecture or a panel/conference). Accepted articles will feature news directly related to developments from member schools and programs of public health.

    Examples of appropriate articles:

    • Establishing a new center or partnership of state, national, or international prominence
    • School or Program taking a stake in public health issues (e.g., local health departments accreditation)

    Examples of articles that would not be accepted:

    • Blatant self-promotion
    • Coursework, degrees, and/or academic programs
    • Hosting speakers or lectures
    • Faculty speaking engagements or panels
    • Events or news that is only at the school- or program-level
    • Featuring a delegation – unless it is specifically noted why it is of importance
    • Student internships and fellowships

    Faculty & Staff Honors

    Mission:  This section highlights state, national, and international accolades/achievements/awards made by the faculty and staff of accredited member schools and programs of public health. Accepted articles will focus on the highest accolades and efforts by faculty and staff, and be relevant to our target audiences.

    Examples of appropriate articles:

    • Faculty being awarded or honored by a state, national, or international organization for their public health work
    • High profile appointments at the city, state, national, or international level (e.g., editor-in-chief of journal, appointed to national panel or body)
    • Grant announcements related to individual or group faculty members
    • Articles related to the appointment of a new primary representative at a member school or program of public health
    • Articles concerning the appointment of provosts, associate deans, deans, and primary representatives

    Examples of articles that would not be accepted:

    • University based awards or appointments
    • Announcements of new faculty or faculty changes (excluding primary representatives)
    • Speaking engagements or panels
    • Faculty being interviewed or articles about their research being cited by third parties
    • Articles concerning publishing of books or textbooks
    • Fellowships, internships, travel grants

    Student & Alumni Achievements

    Mission:  Highlights state, national, and international accolades/achievements made by students and alumni of schools and programs of public health in order to highlight the benefits of an accredited education. Stories must be tied to a newsworthy event/source instead of just a profile. Accepted articles will focus on the best of the best from member students/alumni, and be relevant to our target audiences.

    Examples of appropriate articles:

    • Students/alumni being awarded or honored by a state, national, or international organization for their public health work
    • High profile appointments at the city, state, national, or international level (e.g., editor-in-chief of journal, appointed to national panel or body). Inclusion to be determined by editorial staff
    • Stories about student/alumni’s unique or prominent work in the public health field. Inclusion to be determined by editorial staff

    Examples of articles that would not be accepted:

    • University based awards
    • Speaking engagements or panels
    • Stories mainly related to coursework
    • Fellowships, internships, travel grants

    Partners in Public Health

    Mission:  This section highlights news from ASPPH partner organizations. Information regarding partner’s initiatives, awards, and updates would be included in this section.


    Mission:  Highlights member or partner events, which can take place on or off campus (if off campus, the event must be hosted by the member institution). Events must be open to the public and appeal to an audience broader than the submitting/hosting institution. Submissions must be received a minimum of two weeks prior to the event taking place.
